The Sad Death of my Beloved Friends: Constant Companions and the Life Expectancy of Technology March 8, 2007

This year I’ve experienced the sad death of two very loved pieces of technology that make my day to day life a little easier and brighter.
About 2 months ago my TI-83 began to act up. Not multiplying 2pi correctly and displaying odd things. I changed the batteries hoping it was just a lack of energy. Nope, within a half an hour of changing the batteries my calculator, that wonderful long lasting companion of my math classes and many hours of physics, went blank and never came back on. Borrowing a scientific calculator from Jenny for the time. Life: 6 years.
I charged my iPod in a few days ago and left it as usual over night. When I went to listen to it on my way to class the next morning it said it had no battery. Same thing yesterday. So last night I plug it in again. Now it has a very sad battery display saying it has no power. It has died after a year of suffering. It no longer is able to accept the charge from the computer, and the computer no longer realizes it’s there. Tragic, tragic day. I now have no portable music, silent bus rides now.
Life: 22.5 months.
